”Optimal management of low-temperature geothermal reservoirs – Polish-Icelandic cooperation on reservoir modelling” (GeoModel)

Implementation period: 2022-10-01 - 2025-02-28

Type: International

Division: Division of Renewable Energy Sources

In October 2022, the implementation of the pre-defined project ”Optimal management of low-temperature geothermal reservoirs – Polish-Icelandic cooperation on reservoir modelling” (GeoModel) began. The project is financed under the Fund for Bilateral Relations through the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism (EEA FM) and the Norwegian Financial Mechanism (NFM) 2014-2021, programme “Environment, Energy and Climate Change”.

The main objective of the project is to improve the management of low-temperature geothermal resources in Poland and Iceland (and eventually in other countries as well), by facilitating access to appropriate reservoir modeling tools and promoting the advantages of regular and thorough monitoring of resources. Reducing the barriers related to access to computer programs for modeling geothermal reservoirs should contribute to this. During the project implementation, new tools will be developed that will support the calibration of numerical models, will enable modeling of heat transport and water flow in highly saline reservoirs (such as in the Polish Lowlands) and will be helpful in calculating wellheads’ parameters, as well as support the decision-making process regarding the optimal location of future drillings.
